Nobody's reading my stuff... so what?

Updated: Feb 8

A Guide to Creating Without Giving a Damn

"Nobody's gonna read your stories."

"Nobody watches your reels."

"Nobody..." Yeah, yeah, I've heard it all before.

It's like the official anthem of the creatively discouraged. Especially when it's sung by someone you thought was in your fan club (turns out, they were just in the "concerned citizen" club).

But guess what? I did write those stories. I did post those reels. And so what if "nobody" noticed? (Okay, maybe some people noticed... hi Mom!)

It reminds me of Adrian Mole and his nemesis, Barry Kent. Barry Kent! The neighborhood bully, the bane of Adrian's existence, became a famous author. If Barry Kent can get published, it gives you pause, right?

I mean, I've seen some stuff out there in the real world, and let's just say it makes you wonder about the publishing industry's vetting process. (Like, did they lose a bet? Is it performance art?)

The point is, creating anything takes guts. Writing a book? That takes a whole other level of courage (and probably a lot of caffeine). And honestly, most creators probably start out just wanting to get the crazy ideas out of their heads and into the real world.

Sales figures? Marketing strategy? Those come later.

First, you gotta wrestle that beast of an idea onto the page (or screen, or canvas, or whatever your chosen medium is).

So, if you're thinking about creating something but you're worried about whether anyone will care... just DO IT. Eat that proverbial frog. (Or, you know, eat an actual frog and make a reel about it. That's content gold right there.)

Be yourself, go with the flow, and see what happens. You might surprise yourself. And hey, even if "nobody" notices, at least you created something.

And that's pretty darn cool. :)
